Vex thyself, O spirit, not,
That the all-surpassing light,
God's true image shining bright,
Self in servant's form doth veil;
Vex thyself, O spirit, not!(1.)

Art thou he who shall come here,
Friend of souls, in church's garden?
Now my heart is full of doubt,
Shall I for another wait, then?(2.)
But, O soul, thou shouldst not doubt,
Let mere reason not ensnare thee.
Thy true Shiloh,(3.) Jacob's light,
Thou canst in the scripture witness.

Messiah now appeareth
From all his works of blessing.
Unclean will be made clean:
The lame in spirit walking,
The blind in spirit seeing(4.)
The shining light of grace.

God's outstretched arms would clasp the wretched
With mercy here and there;
He gives to them of his great mercy
The greatest wealth, the word of life.

O soul, let no sadness
From Jesus divide thee,
O soul, be thou true!
The crown doth await thee,
Reward of his mercy,
When thou the bonds of the body art free.

For this though I e'en suffer
Here opposition's force
Like as I debt now
Eterity is comming
Joy is present
Likewise doth not end
Knoweth therefore Christ
Shall befall me
